On March 17th 2010 the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) proposed changes to labeling requirements for certain flea control products. This action was the result of a study that took a year to complete. The majority of pet owner complaints were minor in nature, but there were also more serious complaints including seizures and death.
Here are tips for the safe use of spot-on flea treatments.
- Consult with your veterinarian before using a flea treatment. Ask for advice on which product they recommend, and if you have any questions on the proper way to use it, be sure to ask.
- Read and follow the directions and safety precuastions to the letter. Failure to do so can harm your cat or dog.
- Choose a treatment specifically designed for your pet. Things like; weight, general health of your pet, if it’s for a cat or dog, are critical considerations. Never, and I mean never, use a product designed for a dog on a cat. There may be chemicals in dog treatments that are toxic to cats let alone the potency of the treatment could be stronger. Bottom line is, a cat’s physiology is more sensitive to certain chemicals (and some natural substances by the way), and so extra care must be taken.
- You might consider treating your pets only when flea and ticks are present. In areas where these pests are seasonal, or after an infestation has been brought under control, you might be able to curtail treatment or cut back on frequency. Your pet care provider can advise you on the frequency of use.
- If you’re uncomfortable with chemical based treatments then you might consider a “natural” substance. However, just because it’s considered natural does not mean it is safe. There are some natural substances that can be particularly harmful to felines.
Many pet owners use spot-on treatments without incident. However, there is always a risk associated with any treatment. That doesn’t’ mean we can ignore the fact that fleas pose a health risk to our pets and families. Flea control is a key element of pet care.
